Life in Palestine is an experience that transcends mere words; it’s a journey that must be lived and felt to truly appreciate its depth. International volunteers, students, and interns at Study in Palestine are afforded countless opportunities for genuine Palestinian cultural immersion during their stay in this remarkable land.
Cultural Immersion
Living with local host families, internationals become intimately acquainted with the daily life of Palestinian households. This immersive experience involves engaging with families, playing with children, and partaking in traditional culinary customs.
From savoring the simple delight of bread with hummus and yogurt to indulging in more complex dishes featuring various renditions of chicken, rice, and vegetables, this gastronomic exploration is just one facet of life in Palestine.
Exploration in Hebron
During your time in Hebron, there’s a spectrum of activities to engage in. Exploring the enchanting old city is a must, and you can also frequent traditional and Western-style coffee shops.
Making friends is a breeze in Hebron, with coffee meetups and city exploration made all the easier with affordable taxi services. When you yearn for tranquility, the city boasts hidden gardens and parks where you can unwind and socialize with friends.
Safety and Exploration
In terms of safety, while the situation in Palestine can be tense, internationals can navigate the region safely as long as they steer clear of certain areas. On their days off, they have the opportunity to explore other nearby cities like Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jericho, the Dead Sea, Ramallah, and more.
These cities are replete with historic sites, including mosques, churches, and ancient ruins, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region. Scenic landscapes and mountains further beckon travelers to embark on unforgettable journeys.
The Culture of Hospitality
Palestine’s culture of hospitality sets it apart from other destinations. Palestinians are renowned for their warmth, friendliness, and generosity toward visitors. Internationals are frequently invited to participate in various occasions, from dinners and barbecues to weddings and more.
Reflecting on their Experiences
Former volunteers have shared their thoughts on life in Palestine. Monica, a volunteer from America, who took part in the Teach English Study Arabic program, expressed, “Itโs one of the best experiences of my life so far. I truly feel at home because of the love and warmth I have been shown here by my coworkers, host family, and new local friends and their families. In just two months, Iโve been able to experience so many things and gain a deeper understanding of life in Palestine, both its beauty and the often-overlooked tragedies.”
Another intern, Melanie, from Canada, shared her perspective: “It was overwhelming at first, but I felt very taken care of by my host family. Working at the center is excellent practice for my future career, and I’ve had the opportunity to meet numerous Palestinian people. The students are also very kind and often invite us for coffee or to visit Bethlehem.”
Karl, hailing from Sweden, studying Arabic in Palestine, provided his insights: “I study every day and continue to meet generous and friendly people. We often gather to smoke shisha (hookah) and engage in conversations about Sweden and the situation in Palestine. I learn about the conflict from the perspective of the Palestinian people.”
