5 Things to Know About the People of Palestine: When arriving in Hebron, Palestine, either as a volunteer or intern with Study in Palestine or as an independent traveler to the West Bank, Palestine, international visitors will quickly encounter a distinct culture and identity that is emblematic of the Palestinian people.
It is important to note that Western media often portrays this unique community predominantly through the prism of the political conflict with Israel. However, Palestinians boast a rich social history and a unique cultural identity that has endured for generations. It can be asserted that the most resilient aspect of Palestine’s history is its people.
With this perspective in mind, let’s delve into five overarching insights about the People of Palestine.
Warm Hospitality
Upon your arrival in Hebron and throughout the West Bank, you’ll likely be greeted with warm welcomes and friendly waves. Local Palestinians are genuinely delighted to host visitors and are eager to engage in conversation. Their inquisitiveness often leads to the recurring question, “Where are you from?” as they express a sincere interest in getting to know you.
This welcoming spirit extends beyond mere curiosity. You’ll find yourself receiving a wide range of invitations, whether it’s an offer to join them for a cup of qahwah (coffee), an invitation to embark on a weekend bus adventure to Jericho, or even the chance to visit their offices in the volatile H2 section of Hebron for discussions on human rights. The Palestinian community is known for its openness, and these invitations will come from individuals at all levels of engagement.
As an example, Chris, a volunteer from the United States, neared the end of his term with EC. Center co-director Marwa Shantir extended a heartfelt invitation to his upcoming Spring wedding along with her co-director, Osama Abu Hussein. “We would love to have you join us,” Marwa warmly confided, reflecting the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Palestinian people.
Dignity and Self-Respect
One prominent trait that immediately strikes visitors in the West Bank is the unmistakable sense of honor and self-possession exhibited by the residents, particularly the elderly and ambitious young women. During a visit to the renowned Al-Fawwar refugee camp south of Hebron in the fall of 2019, Study in Palestine volunteers had the privilege of meeting Afef Atasha, a camp elder and the first practicing attorney from Al Fawwar. Afef eloquently presented the challenges faced by his people and appealed for tolerance in a manner that left the volunteers captivated.
During the same visit, the volunteers were introduced to a group of young teenagers who exuded a remarkable sense of composure and grace. Yves, a volunteer from Canada, remarked, “They are quite remarkable.” Furthermore, in alignment with this theme of impressive young women, an English language workshop at Hebron University, facilitated by Study in Palestine volunteers, featured numerous women who confidently showcased their ambitions and self-respect. The evident self-assuredness of the elders, women, and citizens, in general, stands out as a distinct and admirable quality for those experiencing the West Bank for the first time.
Embracing Tolerance
A common refrain among the people of Palestine, especially among those who recall the era before 1967, is, “We have nothing against the jewish people. The history of Palestine is that of Muslims, Christians, and Jews living together.”
This sentiment is frequently articulated in Hebron and throughout the West Bank with an unwavering emphasis, as if to dispel any misconceptions. While Western media may sometimes portray a sectarian divide, it’s the prevailing culture of tolerance, both as an ideal and a lived reality, that resonates most powerfully among the Palestinian people.
Tech-Savvy Population
Much like the rest of the world, smartphones are ubiquitous in the West Bank. It’s particularly noteworthy to observe imams and schoolgirls proficiently navigating their mobile screens. What sets Hebron and other Palestinian cities apart is the significant role of social media in narrating and disseminating stories. Whether it’s a community excursion to the renowned Wadi Qelt or a football match at the practice pitches near Hebron University, photos and comments circulate swiftly, akin to tour buses or soccer balls in motion. In fact, when compared to Western volunteers at Excellence Center, local residents in Hebron often exhibit a more immediate and adept connection to digital technology.
This technological familiarity serves a purpose far beyond documenting leisure activities. Local non-governmental organization Human Rights Defenders leverages smartphone technology through their “Capturing Occupation Camera Project” to spotlight human rights violations. Founder Badee Dwaik underscores the significance of this modern approach, stating, “The camera is our weapon. We use it to expose the Occupation.”
Memorable
When you consider all of the aspects mentioned above and add a generous dose of good humor along with near-boundless resilience in the face of persistent systematic repression, the Palestinian community becomes an unforgettable experience that will resonate long after your time here comes to a close.
Whether it’s the infectious laughter and boundless joy of the Palestinian children or the shared wisdom of a community elder, you’ll be deeply moved by the palpable sense of dignity and grace that defines this community. You’ll not only be touched by it but also learn from it. Beyond the impressive Instagram posts of the Blue Valley, the Dead Sea, and the myriad holy sites in the region, it’s the profound experience of the Palestinian people that will leave an enduring imprint on your memory.
